Produced by the oldest mint in the western hemisphere, Casa de Moneda de Mexico, the Mexican Silver Libertad was first introduced to the world in 1982 and currently ranks among the most popular silver coins in the world. The Mexican Coat of Arms which has been used throughout Mexico’s history is wonderfully depicted on the coins obverse. The image shows an eagle perched upon a cactus devouring a snake in commemoration fo the founding of Mexico City.

According to the legend, Huitzilopochtli who was the Aztec God of the sun, told the tribes of Mexico to watch for a divine symbol of an eagle consuming a snake. The symbol was to mark the location that they were to settle and build their capital. The vision was witnessed by the Aztecs on a small swampy island in Lake Texcoco and they built their city called Tenochtitlan.

The 2011 Mexican Silver Libertad coin depicts on it’s reverse the ‘El Angel de la Independencia’ (The Angel of Independence) which is a 22 ft tall landmark bronze statue gilded in 24 karat gold. The entire monument is 118 ft. tall and is located in Mexico City. The statue was built to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Mexico’s War of Independence with Spain in 1910 and is actually a statue of Nike who was a Greek goddess of victory. ‘El Angel de la Independencia’ is commonly known in Mexico as “The Angel” and the famous Italian sculpture who created the statue is Enrique Alciati. Symbolizing victory, she holds in her right hand a laurel crown and in her left she holds a broken chain which represents Mexico’s freedom from Spanish rule.

The twin volcanos Popcatepetl and Iztaccihual can be seen in the background of the 2011 Mexican Silver Libertad’s reverse. The volcanoes were named after the marrage of a prince and princess against their parents’ wishes from two  opposing native tribes. According to legend, the two lovers’ spirits reside within the mountains ready to force foreign invaders from their lands.

The 2011 Mexican Silver Libertad is struck in one ounce of 99.9% fine silver and is a fascinating addition to any coin collection. Casa de Moneda de Mexico was the first mint in to be established in the Americas and is the oldest mint in the western hemisphere having been founded in 1535 by Viceroy Antonio. The mint has been responsible for over three centuries for producing the Spanish silver dollar which is more commonly known as a piece of eight. The United States, having recognized the exchangability and high quality of the Spanish silver dollar, established the value of the US silver dollar based on the Spanish silver dollar produced from the Mexican Mint.

The 2011 Mexican Libertad weighs 31.103 g, has a diameter of 40.0 mm, a thickness of 3.0 mm, and is composed of .999 fine silver.
